At Elm Tree Primary School, we are proud to host a Suffolk County Council Resource Base for the Deaf and therefore recognise the importance of developing effective communication skills through British Sign Language (BSL). We believe that learning BSL helps to create an inclusive environment where all children can communicate, collaborate and develop an understanding of Deaf culture and the diverse ways people communicate.

To support this commitment, every class from Reception to Year 6 participates in a weekly or fortnightly BSL lesson. Through a progressive curriculum, pupils build their signing skills year on year, developing confidence in both receptive and expressive communication. Our aim is that, by the end of Year 6, pupils are confident and prepared to undertake the BSL 101 Youth Level 1 assessment.

We value BSL not only as a means of communication but also as a tool that supports wider learning. Research and practical experience have shown that signing and finger spelling can help children develop their understanding of language structures and improve word spelling skills. As a result, BSL contributes to both communication development and literacy outcomes.

By embedding BSL within our curriculum, we aim to foster inclusivity, respect and empathy while equipping all pupils with valuable communication skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
